SPOTLIGHT : FACTS, FIGURES AND COMMENTS FROM SATURDAY’S GAMES

NOTEWORTHY

Navy’s Jerry Dawson returned a punt 68 yards for a touchdown in the Midshipmen’s 28-17 loss to Boston College, the first punt return by Navy for a touchdown since Phil McConkey did it against Syracuse in 1977. Navy quarterback Alton Grizzard’s afternoon also left an impression. He threw five interceptions and lost a fumble.

Wake Forest’s 52-14 victory over previously unbeaten Army was the Deacons’ biggest offensive output since a 66-21 victory over Virginia in 1975. The 52 points were the most Army has given up since a 62-8 loss to North Carolina in 1982.

Texas Christian scored four fourth-quarter touchdowns for its third consecutive come-from-behind victory, 42-21 over Southern Methodist. TCU also defeated Missouri and Oklahoma State on fourth-quarter rallies. The 42 points were the most TCU has scored against SMU since a 48-3 victory in 1916.

Jeff Shudak kicked two field goals in Iowa State’s 34-20 victory over Western Michigan, giving him 44 in his career. That broke the school record of 43 set by Alex Giffords in 1979-82.

Notre Dame, which had to rally to defeat Michigan and Michigan State the past two weeks, made Purdue its third Big Ten victim, 37-11. The Boilermakers were held to 24 yards rushing and did not convert any of their 10 third-down opportunities.

Todd Kinchen scored on a 79-yard pass play and set up another touchdown with a 60-yard punt return to help Louisiana State upset No. 11 Texas A&M;, 17-8.

Randy Baldwin broke a 41-year-old Mississippi single-game rushing record with 241 yards in a 31-21 victory over Tulane.

Michigan State won its 500th game with a 34-10 victory over Rutgers.

STREAKS

Alabama’s 59-28 victory over Vanderbilt ended the Crimson Tide’s five-game losing streak, the longest at the school since 1956, and made a winner of Coach Gene Stallings for the first time in his four games as Alabama coach. Alabama scored 52 points in the first half, breaking the school record of 48 set against Mississippi last season.

Northwestern’s 24-7 victory over Northern Illinois ended the Wildcats’ 14-game losing streak. Their last victory, 28-7 over Purdue, came in the 10th game of the 1988 season.

Florida State’s 39-28 victory over Virginia Tech was the Seminoles’ 14th in a row, the longest winning streak in the country.

After its 63-35 victory over William & Mary, Virginia is off to a 5-0 start for the first time since 1949.

NOW THIS IS FOOTBALL

North Carolina State and North Carolina did their scoring with their feet, and most of it from long range. Damon Hartman’s 56-yard field goal as time expired gave the Wolfpack a 12-9 victory. North Carolina’s Clint Gwaltney had tied the score with a 21-yard field goal with 1:06 left. Fans at Chapel Hill, N.C., booed the decision to go for that tying field goal, then fell silent when Hartman kicked his. Hartman had field goals of 45, 40 and 44 yards before his 56-yarder, a school record that topped the 54-yarder he hit against North Carolina in 1988. Gwaltney connected from 48 and 41 yards.

IN QUOTES

Purdue Coach Fred Akers, after the Boilermakers lost to Notre Dame, 37-11: “Give those guys an inch and they’ll take a mile. And they took a couple of miles today.”

Florida Coach Steve Spurrier, after a 34-21 victory over Mississippi State: “We did have some stupid plays, but I really believe our players played with a tremendous amount of effort. . . . When bad things did happen, nobody put their head between their legs and nobody started pointing fingers.”

Kansas was a massive underdog to Oklahoma but outgained the Sooners, 396 yards to 261, in the first half before finally losing, 31-17. Said Oklahoma fullback Kenyon Rasheed: “It was a shock to me . We’re used to putting 60 or 70 points on them.”

Oregon State Coach Dave Kragthorpe, after playing Nebraska tough before losing, 31-7: “Our problem is we’re not as big and strong as Nebraska . We can’t get up and play smash-mouth football with them.”

INJURIES

Arizona State quarterback Paul Justin suffered a separated left shoulder in the third quarter of the Sun Devils’ 30-9 upset loss to Missouri. . . . Colorado quarterback Darian Hagan left the game against Washington because of a bruised shoulder. Colorado won, 20-10. . . . Baylor quarterback Brad Goebel suffered a broken right wrist in the second quarter of the Bears’ 21-15 victory over Texas Tech.

ONE WAY AND ANOTHER

No. 19 Clemson and Atlantic Coast Conference foe Duke are heading in opposite directions. The Tigers, who defeated the Blue Devils, 26-7, at Clemson, S.C., have outscored their opponents, 133-7, at home this season and are 4-1 overall, 2-1 in the ACC. Duke (1-3, 0-2) has been outscored, 85-7, in its last two games.

THEY SHOWED ‘EM

Missouri entered the game against No. 21 and unbeaten Arizona State with a 1-2 record and on the heels of a 58-7 loss to Indiana. The Tigers left the game at Columbia, Mo., with a 30-9 upset victory. It was Missouri’s first victory at home over a Pacific 10 Conference team since 1974 and the Tigers’ first victory over a ranked opponent since a 10-0 defeat of Oklahoma in 1983.

OUT OF THEIR LEAGUE

The eight teams in the Ivy League played nonconference opponents Saturday. Most of them will be happy to pick on someone their own size next Saturday. Seven of the eight Ivy League teams lost, the success story of the afternoon being Dartmouth, which tied New Hampshire, 21-21. The casualty list: Connecticut 44, Yale 7; Colgate 39, Princeton 13; Bucknell 42, Cornell 21; Lehigh 42, Columbia 9; Holy Cross 35, Harvard 14; Lafayette 20, Pennsylvania 13; and Fordham 35, Brown 28. The Ivies were outscored, 278-126.

BIG PLAYS

Notre Dame linebacker Scott Kowalkowski forced Purdue quarterback Eric Hunter to fumble twice. The Fighting Irish turned both into touchdowns in a 37-11 victory.

Chuck Carswell’s punt returns of 14 and 55 yards set up 10 fourth-quarter points as Georgia got its third consecutive comeback victory, 19-15, over East Carolina. Carswell, who sat out the 1989 season with a neck injury, set up a 51-yard touchdown drive with his short return and a field goal with his 55-yarder.

THE HARD WAY

There’s nothing easy about winning for Midwestern State, an NAIA school in Wichita Falls, Tex. The team had lost 10 consecutive games before prevailing over Howard Payne, 23-16, in a game that went into five overtimes. (The teams set up 25 yards from the end zone to start each overtime.) Midwestern ended its streak when Steve Rutherford hit Ronald Heolson for a 25-yard scoring pass. The teams had combined to miss five field-goal attempts from inside the 40 before the game was decided.
