Ship Food No Mess

As veterans of 50 years of freighter travel, we feel that Grahame L. Jones did a fine job of capturing the differences as well as the advantages of freighter voyages versus cruise ship travel in his account of his trip from New Orleans to Durban, South Africa, on the Genevieve Lykes (“Freighter Days Aboard an Africa-Bound Lady,” Sept. 9).

But having enjoyed Lykes Line trips, we must rise to the defense of its food service. By no means “gourmet,” neither were the meals “messes.” Of course, a poor cook can make a mess of the finest ingredients, but Lykes’ ships surpass most foreign flag freighters we have traveled on in the galley department.
