Man Dies After Son Fulfilled Wish to End Life Before Him

LAS VEGAS — A man whose quadriplegic son ended his life a week ago because he wanted to die before his ailing father, died Thursday after a short battle with lung cancer, his attorney said.
Robert Bergstedt, like his son Kenneth, died before the Nevada Supreme Court issued a ruling on Kenneth Bergstedt’s legal request for the right to end his life.
The elder Bergstedt had been his son’s only companion and caretaker, and Kenneth Bergstedt sought in court filings to have the right to end his life because of fear that his father would not be around to take care of him.
Bergstedt’s attorney, Jack Cherry, said the 64-year-old Bergstedt died at Nathan Adelson Hospice, where he checked in with lung cancer after his son’s death last Thursday.
Kenneth Bergstedt, 31, was found dead last Thursday in the mobile home he and his father shared.
