Unification’s Effect on German Airlines: Lufthansa said it has withdrawn its application to acquire a 26% stake in the former East German state airline, Interflug. Lufthansa, which is 51%-owned by the German government, said in a statement that a “changed situation exists” since German unification on Oct. 3. It said because the Bonn government now owns the assets and holdings of the former East German state, the fact that both Lufthansa and Interflug are controlled by one major shareholder “opens creative maneuvering room that must be considered.”
