Soviets won six of the 10 gold medals at the world Greco-Roman wrestling championships at Ostia, Italy. Germany, fielding its first united team for a world sporting championship, won two events. Hungary and Cuba each won one gold.
The best American result was a fourth-place finish by Buddy Lee in the 136-pound class. He lost a 3-0 decision to Wolny Ryzsard of Poland.
