PONTIAC, Mich. — General Motors Corp. is planning to shut down its truck and bus group full-size pickup assembly plants in Pontiac and Ft. Wayne, Ind., for two weeks next month due to slow sales, an official said today.
Kari Hulsey said the plants will be closed for two weeks beginning Nov. 5, affecting about 3,200 Pontiac East employees and about 2,700 Ft. Wayne workers.
She also said the company has told the United Auto Workers that it is thinking about closing the plants for the weeks of Dec. 10 and Dec. 17, extending the usual one-week Christmas vacation to three weeks.
