At Least These Two Eat Big

The waitress brings the food. Mounds of mashed potatoes, swimming in gravy. Chicken with crispy crust. Biscuits with butter. Cornbread on the side. Corn on the cob, too. And apple cobbler. And macaroni and cheese. And chocolate pudding with Cool Whip on top. No salad. Nothing even resembling a salad.
âGentlemen,â the waitress says, âstart your forks.â
George picks up his.
Buster picks up his.
âOK, so tell me,â George Foreman says. âTell me how to fight Evander Holyfield.â
âTrain hard,â Buster Douglas says. âTrain every single day, 15 minutes in the morning, 15 minutes in the evening, like clockwork.â
âThatâs what you did?â
âThatâs what I did.â
âDid you skip rope?â
âNo,â Buster says. âI couldnât get over it.â
âDid you hit the heavy bag?â
âNo,â Buster says. âI was heavier than the heavy bag, so I let the other guys in the gym hit me. â
âDid you sit in a sauna?â
âOnly for a minute,â Buster says. âThen I had to get out of there.â
âWhy?â
âMy sundae melted.â
The waitress comes by.
âCan I bring you gentlemen anything else? Water? Iced tea? An incredibly large doggy bag?â
They send her to a neutral corner of the restaurant.
âIf Iâm going to fight Holyfield next,â Foreman says, âI need you to give me some tips.â
âOK, lead with your left,â Douglas says.
âMy left?â
âHere, Iâll show you how I did it,â Douglas says. âYou take the fork like this. See? You squeeze it. Make sure your arm is away from your body. Good extension is important.â
âI always had good extension.â
âAnd keep your head down at all times, directly over your plate. Donât go gettinâ distracted by anything out the window or anybody over by the salad bar. Head down, left arm extended.â
âGot it.â
âThen quick flicks. Plate to mouth, plate to mouth, plate to mouth. Thatâs it. Now you got it. Not too fast, not too slow, nice and steady. Thatâs it. Down the hatch.â
âLike this?â
âDonât talk with your mouth full. Just breathe, George. Breathing is everything. Câmon, work that esophagus. Yeah. Thatâs it. No, donât chew! You ainât got time for no chewinâ! Work that left hand. Go for them gums.â
The waitress comes by.
âCan I bring you gentlemen anything else? Pepto-Bismol? Bigger silverware? A bigger bucket?â
They send her away.
âWhrghbt mftwrk?â Foreman asks.
âSwallow, George.â
âWhat about my footwork?â Foreman asks.
âItâs not bad,â Douglas says. âPlant yourself. Knees together. Napkin across the lap. Get balanced. Center your body so you donât have to lunge for the butter or the ketchup. And donât hunch over so much. Your sleeveâs in the gravy.â
âBuster, what was the toughest part about fighting Holyfield?â
âWearing a mouthpiece.â
âWhy?â
âCouldnât eat during the round.â
âBuster, what did you protest to the referee about?â
âHolyfield hittinâ below the belt.â
âWhat did Holyfield tell the referee?â
âSaid he couldnât find below my belt.â
âBuster, what was the hardest part about losing your championship belt?â
âGetting it off.â
âWho you feel sorry for most? Yourself? Your manager? Your fans?â
âMy scale. My stool. My tailor.â
âBuster, you looked distracted.â
âI was distracted by the bell.â
âThe bell?â
âThought it meant dinner was ready.â
âBuster, couldnât you have gotten up before the count of 10?â
âSure. With a crane.â
âBuster, why didnât your corner throw in the towel?â
âDidnât have a towel. Had a bib.â
The waitress comes by.
âGentlemen, if thereâs nothing else, Iâll have several waiters come by with your checks.â
They take out a wad of $1,000 bills.
âGeorge, if youâre going to fight Holyfield, may I suggest one thing?â
âWhat?â
âAtlantic City. Much better room service than Vegas.â
âBuster, how in heavenâs name did you ever beat Mike Tyson?â
âFought him in Japan,â Douglas says. âDo you know how hard it is to find 50 or 60 decent cheeseburgers in Japan?â
âA toast,â Foreman says, clinking milk-shake glasses. âTo you and me, Buster. We ainât the heavyweight champions anymore. But weâre the champion heavyweights.â
The waitress comes by.
âWhereâs my change?â Douglas asks.
âKeep your shirt on, Buster,â she says. âAnd I mean that sincerely.â
