PRO FOOTBALL REPORT : WEEKDAY UPDATE : CHARGERS : Byrd Honored for Sunday’s Work

Cornerback Gill Byrd became the Chargers’ all-time interception leader Sunday, and Tuesday became the AFC defensive player of the week.

Byrd tied and then bypassed Dick Harris with a pair of interceptions in the Chargers’ 41-10 victory over Tampa Bay and now has 30 in his eight-year career.

He also presently leads the AFC with five interceptions.

Byrd earned AFC defensive player of the week honors a year ago with two interceptions against Kansas City.

Coach Dan Henning on playing in Seattle’s Kingdome: “They’ve been a sore spot for us in the past.”

Sore spot? The Chargers have not won a game in Seattle since 1980, and have lost 10 of the past 12 games played with the Seahawks.

“I think there’s an advantage in being an underdog in an opponent’s stadium,” Henning said. “And having that feeling of togetherness that that’s all that is going to be there in your favor. The bottom line is, when the ball’s snapped, there’s going to be 11 each out there.”

Henning said tackle Leo Goeas’ arthroscopic surgery to remove a piece of cartilage from his knee was successful. He said Goeas will miss two games at the most . . . Safety Martin Bayless, who missed last week’s game with an ankle injury, is expected to miss practice, but be ready to play Sunday . . . Kickoff and punt returner Nate Lewis will be limited in practice because of a lingering quadriceps muscle injury.

Defensive lineman Burt Grossman was Roy Firestone’s guest on ESPN’s Sports Look Tuesday.

Firestone asked Grossman if he had been cautioned by the Chargers about shooting his mouth off.

“No . . . The owner reads all my articles,” Grossman said. “I think that’s the only reason the owner knows who I am actually.”
