The Big Chic

THE SHOW: “Babes,” 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Fox Television Network
THE SKINNY: The Gilbert sisters--Darlene (Susan Perez), Charlene (Wendie Jo Sperber) and Marlene (Leslie Boone)--share a small New York apartment. The trio dish out fat jokes as they look for love and self-respect in the Big Apple.
THE LOOK: Costume designer Bambi Breakstone (formerly of the trend-setting “Miami Vice”) assembles artistic ensembles that defy formula for big girls.
Animal prints, denim and glitz are a staple for Darlene, the dog groomer. Breakstone wraps makeup artist Charlene in Peter Max-like art-wear jackets over funky T-shirts and bustiers. Marlene, a toll-booth attendant turned large-size panty hose model, is experiencing a makeover. Her preppy style from the pilot episode is being revamped into a more mature look--complete with sexy short skirts.
THE SOURCES: Though most of the costumes are custom-designed, Breakstone also relies on Forgotten Woman in Beverly Hills and the Women’s Department at Bullock’s.
THE PAYOFF: Large-sized women will find inspiration in the sisters’ celebration of selves. Breakstone explains: “The characters are free-spirited--the show is not about hiding--it’s about self-acceptance and loving who you are.”
