TENNIS : Edberg, Becker, Lendl Win; Hlasek Knocks Out McEnroe
Stefan Edberg, Boris Becker and Ivan Lendl continued their battle for the No. 1 ranking in the world Wednesday by winning their second-round matches at the $2-million Paris Indoor tournament.
However, John McEnroe double-faulted at match point in the third set tiebreaker to lose to Jakob Hlasek, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) .
McEnroe survived a point penalty in the second set and came from a break down in the third to force a tiebreaker. But his 10th double-fault knocked the seventh-seeded McEnroe out of the tournament.
Edberg, the world’s No. 1 player, opened the third day of the tournament and needed only an hour to beat Andrei Cherkasov of the Soviet Union, 6-2, 6-3.
Becker had an uncertain start before eliminating American Richey Reneberg, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 for the fourth tournament in a row. Lendl whipped Kevin Curren, 6-3, 6-4, in a routine match with a service break in each game.
Also, American Brad Gilbert avenged a loss to Amos Mansdorf of Israel in the 1988 final with a 6-3, 7-6 (10-8) victory. French Open champion Andres Gomez, seeded fifth, lost to Sergi Bruguera of Spain 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-1.
In the third round, Becker faces Jim Courier and Edberg meets Aaron Krickstein. Courier routed 16th-seeded Juan Aguilera of Spain, 6-1, 6-2, in 55 minutes and Krickstein disappointed the French crowd by knocking out Yannick Noah, 6-3, 6-2.
