PRO FOOTBALL REPORT / WEEKDAY UPDATE : RAIDERS : DeBerg Has Niche With Kansas City
Quarterback Steve DeBerg has been in the wrong place at the wrong time throughout his 14-year NFL career. He was replaced by Joe Montana with the San Francisco 49ers, by John Elway with the Denver Broncos and by Vinny Testaverde with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
“I’ve had a career where, when I get comfortable with a football team and become the starter and it looks like a great situation, then the No. 1 pick in the entire draft becomes a quarterback for the team that I’m on,” DeBerg said.
But DeBerg appears firmly entrenched as the Chiefs’ starter. He has thrown for 1,588 yards and nine touchdowns this season and ranks fourth among AFC quarterbacks going into Sunday’s game against the Raiders in Kansas City.
Asked if he is surprised by his performance this season, DeBerg said: “The main thing with my performance right now is staying healthy. Last year, we were learning a new system and we went through the growing pains of that. This year, I have a very good feeling for the offense.”
Injury report: Raider tackle Rory Graves is questionable with a foot injury, while defensive lineman Mike Wise (ankle injury) and center Dan Turk (knee injury) are probable.
