Father Has Heart Attack During Game
Mike Chamberlain, 49, president of a sports booster club at Mission Bay High School, was in critical condition at Mission Bay Hospital late Friday night after suffering an apparent heart attack Friday afternoon during the first quarter of Mission Bay’s football game at La Jolla.
Paramedics attended to Chamberlain, who was watching his son, David, Mission Bay’s starting center, for approximately 30 minutes in the stands before he was transfered to Mission Bay Hospital and resuscitated at about 3:20 p.m. A nurse in the intensive care unit said Chamberlain, a teacher, was heavily sedated Friday night.
“It’s a shocking reminder that you get wrapped up in a game, and it’s just a game,” Mission Bay Coach Jerry Surdy said. “Life’s so precious. He’s a tremendous backer of our program.”
