World IN BRIEF : MOZAMBIQUE : New Constitution Ends Marxist Rule

The Mozambican parliament unanimously approved a new constitution effective at the end of the month and establishing a multi-party democracy after 15 years of Marxist rule. People’s Assembly deputies burst into applause on passing the constitution, drafted in response to a raging civil war, a shattered economy and intense public debate. Elections are expected to be held next July or August. The constitution also grants workers the right to strike, protects freedom of the press, guarantees an independent judiciary and renames the country the Republic of Mozambique, dropping the word People’s.
