It’s a Grand New Flag: A poster by multimedia artist Daniel J. Martinez depicting an upside down and backward American flag will go up in 10 Los Angeles bus shelters today and Friday. The Los Angeles City Attorney’s office had been asked to rule if the image was art or merely political propaganda. But, Asst. City Atty. John Haggerty said Wednesday, “the city will not dictate what happens” and turned the matter over to the discretion of Gannett Outdoor of Southern California, which owns the bus shelters. The images, which read “Ignore Dominant Culture, They Kill in Cold Blood Behind Closed Doors,” were originally to be erected Nov. 1.
