Digital Equipment Might Have First Layoffs: The struggling computer maker said it would close a plant in Phoenix and eliminate more than 400 jobs, which might require the first layoffs in company history. Digital, which recorded its first-ever quarterly loss earlier this year, cut its payroll by 3,000 positions in its last fiscal year and plans further cuts of 5,000 to 6,000 workers. But it has done so through a severance program that encourages workers to voluntarily leave their jobs.
