WOMEN’S BASKETBALL : Rush Leads 2nd-Half Charge as Valley Women Win, 62-40

Tisa Rush, an all-state player two seasons ago who missed last season because of academic problems, scored 16 of her game-high 19 points in the second half to lead the Valley College women’s basketball team to a 62-40 nonconference win over visiting Cerritos on Tuesday night.

Trailing, 23-22, at halftime, Valley (3-0) outscored Cerritos, 40-17, in the second half behind Rush, a 5-foot-3 guard from Kennedy High.

Claudia Rocha, a sophomore from North Hollywood High, added 14 points and former Burroughs star Wendy Bruse grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds and scored six points.

Former Van Nuys High player Stacie Toon added eight points and 10 rebounds for Valley.

Cerritos (3-2) committed 20 turnovers, 12 in the second half.

In another game:

Cal State San Bernardino 69, The Master’s 37--Junior forward Sandrine Rocher, who played at Valley College and North Hollywood High, scored a game-high 23 points to lead Cal State San Bernardino in a nonconference game at Master’s.

Rocher was the leading scorer by far. No other Cal State San Bernardino player had more than 10 points and, although nine Master’s players scored, Jaci Harris led the Mustangs with eight points.

The Mustangs shot just 19% from the field (12 for 63) and were outrebounded, 53-27.

Master’s trailed, 38-17, at halftime after making just five of 26 field-goal attempts. San Bernardino outscored the Mustangs in the second half, 31-20.

Master’s fell to 0-3. Cal State San Bernardino improved to 1-2.
