Pomona : Historic Preservation Law

The City Council has taken the first step toward establishing a historic preservation ordinance that would give the city control over remodeling and demolition of buildings in designated districts.

The council unanimously instructed the city staff to prepare an ordinance based on a model developed by the state Office of Historic Preservation but tailored to Pomona’s needs. The ordinance will create a Historic Preservation Commission to oversee the establishment of historic zones.

Pomona Heritage and the city’s Cultural Arts Commission urged the council to act, saying many important buildings have been lost. Councilman Mark A. T. Nymeyer said the commission should have only limited powers, with the final authority resting with the council.
