Two Late Scores Lift Poly to 29-20 Win Over Locke

Poly High scored two late touchdowns to score a 29-20 victory over Locke in the first round of the City Section 3-A Division playoffs Wednesday night at Fremont High.
The Parrots (8-3) will play Manual Arts, a 13-7 winner against Wilson, in the quarterfinals.
Trailing midway through the fourth quarter, 20-15, Poly began its comeback when Steve Chavez recovered Locke quarterback Bobby Savannah’s fumble at the Poly 32-yard.
Poly proceeded to march 68 yards in 14 plays--capped by Lance Garcia’s one-yard plunge--and take a 21-20 lead with one minute to play.
Poly scored again when sophomore Danny Martinez intercepted Savannah’s pass and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown with 39 seconds left. The two-point conversion gave Poly its victory margin.
Savannah completed nine of 21 passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns.
Trailing, 15-14, in the second quarter, Locke (8-3) marched 67 yards to take a 20-15 lead on Savannah’s four-yard touchdown pass to Steven Martin as time expired in the first half.
Poly had taken its one-point lead with 5:17 left in the second quarter on quarterback Lance Garcia’s 25-yard scoring strike to Marlon McKinney.
Poly running back Jonathan Campbell gained 161 yards in 32 carries and scored the Parrots’ first touchdown, a one-yard run in the first quarter that tied the score, 8-8.
Garcia completed three of five for 48 yards and one touchdown with two interceptions.
