SOUTHEAST ROUNDUP : Archer Goes Out a Winner as LSU Defeats Tulane, 16-13

Two big defensive plays enabled Louisiana State Coach Mike Archer to win his final game at the helm, as the Tigers beat Tulane, 16-13, in a nonconference game Saturday night at Baton Rouge, La.

On third and one from the LSU 14 with three minutes left, Tulane quarterback Deron Smith tried a sneak to keep the drive alive and was stopped for no gain. On fourth down, Tulane elected to go for it, rather than settle for the tie, and this time Chance Miller was stopped for no gain by LSU’s Anthony Marshall and Reggie Walker.

LSU finished 5-6, Tulane 4-7.

Archer quit two weeks ago when it was reported the decision had already been made to fire him.

It appears that Tulane Coach Greg Davis will not return next year either. A New Orleans television station, WWL-TV, reported that the school will not renew Davis’ contract. Davis had three losing seasons as head coach of the Green Wave.

Wake Forest 56, Vanderbilt 28--Anthony Williams rushed for 141 yards and three touchdowns and Keith West passed for 229 yards and three touchdowns at Nashville, Tenn., as the Deacons (3-8) of the Atlantic Coast Conference routed the Commodores (1-9) of the Southeastern Conference.

West started at quarterback for Wake Forest because Phil Barnhill, the school’s fifth all-time passing yardage leader, injured an ankle late in the week during practice.
