HONOLULU — A TWA jumbo jet with 324 people aboard returned safely to Honolulu International Airport early today after one of its engines failed in heavy turbulence east of Hawaii, a spokeswoman said today.
The Boeing 747 bound for St. Louis was at 31,000 feet between 400 and 500 miles east of Honolulu when it was forced to turn back, said Elly Brekke, a spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration district office in Los Angeles.
Brekke said the outboard engine on the airplane’s left wing failed for as-yet-undetermined reasons.
