RACING ROUNDUP : Shotgun Edges Past Dancer at Hawthorne

STICKNEY, Ill. — Shotgun edged Forever Dancer by the slimmest of margins in the $94,750 Hawthorne Juvenile Stakes at Hawthorne Race Course on Sunday.

The track’s placing judges required about seven minutes to determine that Shotgun, ridden by Scott E. Miller, had gained a nostril decision to earn first place money of $56,850 in the 63rd running of the 1 1/6-mile race for 2-year-olds.

Shotgun, trained and co-owned by D. Wayne Lukas, was timed in 1:45 35 over a fast track. Forever Dancer finished 1 1/4 lengths in front of Shatter the Stars.

Star Track Farms’ Jack Betta Be Rite, the favorite, came from just off the pace and won the $87,300 Schenectday Handicap for 3-year-old fillies at Aqueduct by two lengths Sunday.

Carrying 118 pounds and Dennis Saul, the winner covered six furlongs on a fast track in 1:10 1/5.

Proud N’Appeal, 115 and Jorge Chavez, finished second in the eight-horse field, 3 3/4 lengthsahead of Company Girl.

Super Cholo, Maryland’s 2-year-old champion of 1989, won his first race in nearly a year Sunday, taking the $54,825 Annapolis Handicap at Laurel Race Course in Maryland. Super Cholo overtook 20-1 long-shot Temper Time in the final stride for a nose victory.
