Half of Quarter’s Mergers Are International: Cross-border deals accounted for the majority of the value of merger and acquisition activity in the third quarter, Mergers & Acquisitions magazine reported. Foreign companies acquired 112 U.S. companies valued at $14.7 billion, and American firms bought 57 companies overseas with a value of $7.5 billion. The combined value of the cross-border purchases--$22.2 billion--was 52% of the total mergers and acquisitions value of $42.9 billion, representing 378 deals. In the third quarter of 1989, there were 814 deals valued at $52.8 billion.
