County Agency’s Effort
The Los Angeles County Commission on Human Relations and the Media Image Coalition of Minorities and Women, formed under the commission’s sponsorship, applaud Howard Rosenberg for his insightful “Burger King Bows to TV Watchdogs” (Nov. 14).
We are deeply concerned by the recent actions of sponsors and television networks which result in programming decisions based on guidelines established by self-proclaimed media monitors.
We have a commitment to changing TV’s portrayal of ethnic, racial and religious minorities, women, gays, lesbians, seniors and people with disabilities. The promotion of our viewpoint or that of any other group, however, cannot be at the expense of free speech.
By shaping realistic images of groups often portrayed only in a negative manner, or not portrayed at all, television can help to reduce prejudice and discrimination.
