Benefit Doesn’t Deliver: Veteran soul singer Curtis Mayfield, who was paralyzed from the neck down in a concert accident in Brooklyn, N.Y., this summer, is out the $7,500 raised from an all-star benefit rap concert held at the Palace in Hollywood last August. Todd Mayfield, the singer’s son, said that the check from the Palace, which was closed and padlocked last month by bankruptcy trustees, bounced after it was deposited by the charitable organization created to help defray Mayfield’s hospital expenses. Legal action may be taken to get the money raised for him. Mayfield, who was hit by a lighting scaffold blown down by a strong gust of wind during an outdoor concert in August, may be released from the hospital by Christmas.
