Retiring NYSE Chief to Join Merrill Lynch

The retiring chairman and chief executive of the New York Stock Exchange, John J. Phelan Jr., will join the board of brokerage giant Merrill Lynch & Co.
Phelan said earlier this year that he would step down at the end of 1990 after 6 1/2 years in the top post at the NYSE. He is being succeeded by William H. Donaldson.
