Molly Hunter’s off-balance desperation 15-footer at the buzzer clanged off the front of the rim as the University of San Diego lost 95-93 in overtime to Loyola Marymount in a West Coast Conference game.
USD’s Melisa Sortino, a 5-7 freshman guard, made a clutch 15-foot baseline shot with three seconds left in regulation to tie it, 81-81.
Chris Enger, who led the Toreras with 24 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks, fouled out with 3:18 left in overtime. Christi English, who had 19 points and nine rebounds, fouled out with 12 seconds left in regulation.
Joelle Longobardi, who led Loyola with 24 points, fouled out with 2:27 left in regulation. It was that kind of game--52 total fouls.
USD trailed by four early in overtime, but Sortino hit a three-pointer. Later, trailing by five, Hunter scored underneath.
Hunter (15 points) made a reverse layup with 27 seconds to pull USD within one, 94-93. After Loyola missed the second of two free throws with 20 seconds left, Sortino got the rebound. Angie Straub missed an 18-footer with four seconds left. Sortino tipped the long rebound to Hunter, whose only hope was the off-balance shot.
USD, which has lost four of five, fell to 13-13, 8-5, but remained in third place. Loyola improved to 11-16, 4-9.
