Fire Forces Evacuation of Reseda Supermarket
A fire of unknown origin sent smoke into the second floor of a Vons supermarket in Reseda on Friday, forcing evacuation of some customers as a precaution, the Los Angeles Fire Department and store employees said.
The fire in the supermarket in the 18100 block of Sherman Way started about 9:15 p.m. and was put out in 20 minutes, Fire Department spokesman Jim Wells said. It was confined to a storage area, and automatic sprinklers helped prevent the fire from spreading, fire officials said.
A store manager who declined to give his name said he believed that the fire was intentionally set. He said he saw a man run out of the store and make a call from a pay phone seconds after the fire started.
No damage estimate was available.
