Christ College Snaps Triton Women’s Winning Streak
Christ College Irvine snapped UC San Diego’s 15-game winning streak with a 73-63 nonconference women’s basketball victory in La Jolla.
Kathleen Alvarez led UCSD with 20 points. Cari Young added 18 and Lisa Beaver 13. UCSD dropped to 21-5. Christ College is 21-6.
Point Loma Nazarene College had four starters in double figures as the visiting Crusaders defeated Southern California College, 72-58, in a Golden State Athletic Conference game.
For PLNC (22-7), Becky Wilson scored 16, Shannon Abrams 15, Camille Armijo 12 and Lisa Miller 10. SCC fell to 13-17.
BASEBALL
UC San Diego’s Bryan Thomason pitched 10 shutout innings, but was greeted in the top of the 11th by freshman John Kluksdahl, who led off the inning with a homer over the right-field fence to give the College of Idaho a 1-0 victory at UCSD.
Thomason had allowed only five hits before the home run. He struck out eight and walked two. Quinten Nelson and Allen Pfeiffer (1-0) combined on a four-hitter for the Coyotes (3-2). Kluksdahl also doubled. UCSD fell to 2-6.
San Diego State dropped a series-opening game to Cal Lutheran, 5-2, at Smith Field. Steve Dietz and Scott Dennison both went two for four for the Aztecs (8-5).
Cal Lutheran improved to 7-1. The second game of the series begins tonight at 5.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Mike Mattarocci connected for 18 kills as San Diego State came back from a one-game deficit to pin a loss on Stanford, 8-15, 15-12, 15-10, 15-9, at Stanford’s Maples Pavilion.
Mattarocci was one of four Aztecs in double figures for kills. Sean Clark had 16 and John Ross and Mike Schlegel had 10 each.
SDSU improved to 7-3, 3-2 in the Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. Stanford fell to 5-6, 4-5.
SOFTBALL
San Diego State won two of three one-run games in round-robin play of their SDSU Spring Classic at Kit Carson Park.
SDSU defeated Minnesota, 2-1, when Shannon Fitzgerald scored in the bottom of the eighth of the scheduled seven-inning game.
The Aztecs defeated Cal State Northridge, 1-0, as Christy Westerlund singled in Stephanie Chapel with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, and Michelle Wesson (3-2) pitched a two-hitter.
Cal State Long Beach downed SDSU, 1-0, on a one-hitter by Ruby Flores.
UC San Diego (2-2) swept a doubleheader from visiting Cal State San Bernardino, winning the first game, 1-0, and the second, 3-1.
Melissa Mazanet went two for three for UCSD in the second game, and Kathy Fogg (1-1) pitched five innings for the victory. In Game 1, Diana Moreno (1-1) was the winning pitcher. Cal State San Bernardino fell to 0-4.
MEN’S BOWLING
Jess Stayrook of San Diego qualified first for today’s stepladder final round of $130,000 Flagship City Open. Stayrook, who rolled two 300 games en route to the top seed, needs only one victory for the title.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
San Diego State (3-4) defeated UC Irvine, 7-2, in a nonconference match at Irvine. At No. 1 singles, Dorey Brandt defeated Kelly Goldsborough, 6-4, 6-2. Brandt and Nicole Storto defeated Stacey Cadigan and Ali Yoshimoto, 6-4, 7-5, at No. 1 doubles.
Fifteenth-ranked SDSU has won three in a row since losing its first four matches.
SDSU’s Paige Hammond was a double winner, defeating Yoshimoto, 6-2, 7-5, at No. 4 singles and teamming with Eva Olivarez for a victory at No. 2 doubles. UC Irvine is 4-7.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Point Loma Nazarene College lost its last game of the season, 98-93, to Southern California College. PLNC finished its fourth consecutive losing season at 11-19 and 3-9 in the Golden State Athletic Conference.
Southern California College (22-7, 9-3) was led by Jeff Bickmore’s 32 points. PLNC’s Rusty Fallin scored 27.
