The Newport Harbor boys’ soccer team showed little regard for the seedings and even less for visiting Workman Friday. The Sailors pounded their way to a 2-1 victory in the quarterfinals of the Southern Section Division 1-A playoffs.
The victory sends Newport Harbor into Tuesday’s semifinals against Corona del Mar.
Workman (22-4-1) entered the match seeded No. 2 against unseeded Newport Harbor (16-4-8). But the Sailors were not fazed as they relentlessly hammered away at Workman goalkeeper Mario Quezada until scoring on Chris Hunter’s 20-yard kick off an inbounds pass from Matt Sherwood with 22 minutes left in the first half.
“We fought hard,” Newport Harbor Coach Alan Payne said. “We missed loads of goals. We dominated. I thought the referee was a bit biased toward the end, like he was trying to pull it out for them.”
Newport Harbor took a 2-0 lead with 20 minutes left in the second half when Branon Coluccio took Todd Tift’s free kick and got the ball past Quezada.
