HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER SOUTHERN SECTION PLAYOFFS : Defense Sends Simi Valley to Semifinals, 4-0
Simi Valley High limited Alta Loma to just four shots on goal in cruising to a 4-0 victory in a Southern Section 4-A Division boys’ quarterfinal soccer match at home Friday.
Simi Valley (22-2-1) jumped to a 2-0 halftime lead on goals by Mike Hall and Mike Albin.
Paul Whittle and Brian Weaver added goals in the second half for Simi Valley.
In other quarterfinal matches:
Cerritos 1, Burbank 0 (double overtime)--Burbank fell in a 3-A boys’ match at home. Burbank (15-6) last advanced past the quarterfinal round in 1986, when it lost, 1-0, to Esperanza in the 3-A championship game.
Oak Park 3, Bosco Tech 1--Visiting Oak Park, seeded third in the Small Schools Division, broke a 1-1 second-half tie against unseeded Bosco Tech and advanced to the semifinals.
A Mike Stern goal put Oak Park (17-1) ahead, 1-0, at halftime, but Bosco Tech tied the score early in the second half. Oak Park’s Jeff Gibbons scored the final two goals of the match in the closing 15 minutes. Goalkeeper Phil Cravitz of Oak Park had six saves.
GIRLS
L.A. Westlake 2, La Reina 1--Host Westlake (8-8-3), the Sunshine League’s No. 2 entrant, emerged victorious in a 1-A Division quarterfinal, beating La Reina on penalty kicks, 5-4.
