VENTURA : Depot to Be Built for Amtrak Passengers

The Ventura Redevelopment Agency voted 6 to 0 Monday to take bids for a platform that would serve four passenger trains traveling daily between San Diego and Santa Barbara.
A 500-foot-long concrete platform and a small shelter are planned for the intersection of Harbor Boulevard and Figueroa Street to serve two northbound and two southbound Amtrak trains a day, project manager Dave Valeska said. Tickets will be sold aboard the train.
The trains will follow the route designated as The San Diegan, making stops in Ventura, Oxnard, Simi Valley, Chatsworth, Van Nuys, Burbank, Glendale and elsewhere, before reaching Union Station in Los Angeles and continuing on to San Diego, Valeska said. The Ventura stop will be new.
Parking for the station will be supplied at the Ventura County Fairgrounds for $1 a day, he said.
If bidding and construction follow schedule, the station will be open by August, in time to serve the Ventura County Fair, Valeska said. The project is estimated to cost $668,000, which will be covered by the city’s downtown redevelopment funds.
