Merrill Lynch & Co.: The nation’s biggest brokerage firm posted a profit of $181 million, more than four times that of the same 1990 period. Revenue rose 18% to $3.15 billion. The company cited a sharp rise in New York Stock Exchange trading volume, layoffs and other cost-control measures.
