McDonald Will Coach 49er Women
Cal State Long Beach will hold a news conference today at 10 a.m. to announce the selection of Glenn McDonald as head coach of the women’s basketball program, according to sources close to the team.
McDonald, an assistant coach with the 49ers the past five seasons, will replace Joan Bonvicini, who left Long Beach after 12 seasons to take over the University of Arizona’s program.
The field of about 20 applicants for the 49er position was reduced to two--McDonald and Trish Roberts, who heads the women’s program at the University of Maine. Roberts was still in Maine Wednesday and said she hadn’t been told about today’s news conference, adding: “If they’re having one, I guess it isn’t me.”
McDonald, 39, a first-round draft choice of the Boston Celtics in 1974, worked closely with the Long Beach players in their academic studies and class scheduling.
