WEEKEND TV : ‘Dinner’ and L.A. Politics on Sunday

Local politicians, Norman Lear and the toast of Broadway take center stage this weekend.

In what should be their final television appearances before next Tuesday’s City Council elections, candidates from the 8th and 9th Districts square off at 10 a.m. Sunday on Channel 2’s “Newsmakers.” Mark Ridley-Thomas will debate Rod Wright for the 8th District seat, while Bob Gay challenges Rita Walters in the 9th District race.

Norman Lear’s much anticipated new series, “Sunday Dinner,” premieres Sunday at 8 p.m. on Channels 2 and 8. Robert Loggia stars as middle-aged man who falls for a much younger woman in this romantic comedy that also tackles the nature of religion and spirituality. CBS will follow it up at 8:30 with the first episode of Lear’s famed series “All in the Family.”

Then at 9 p.m., CBS will televise “The 45th Annual Tony Awards.” Julie Andrews and Jeremy Irons host the program that will honor the best in American theater over the past year. Other stars appearing on the show include Audrey Hepburn, Joan Collins, Whoopi Goldberg, Lily Tomlin, Raul Julia and William Hurt.
