BASEBALL : DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Valenzuela Might Start Saturday
The Angels are expected to announce today they are promoting Fernando Valenzuela to the major leagues. A roster move would be necessary to make room for the pitcher, who might make his Angel debut Saturday at Anaheim Stadium against the Detroit Tigers.
Club President Rich Brown said he planned to watch Valenzuela throw Monday “and we’ll make a decision (today).”
Valenzuela, who was released by the Dodgers in March, was signed by the Angels. He agreed to make three minor league starts, in which he pitched 17 innings and didn’t allow an earned run.
The Angels chose Florida State first baseman Eduardo Perez, son of former Cincinnati Red star Tony Perez, as their first-round pick and 17th overall in Monday’s amateur draft.
Perez, 21, hit .377 for the Seminoles this season with 11 home runs and 58 RBIs. He is 6 feet 4, 220 pounds. Tom Kotchman, the Angels’ scouting supervisor for Florida, said the club projects Perez as an outfielder. “He’s got enough arm strength and speed to play left or right,” Kotchman said. “I don’t want to put a timetable on him, especially with a kid that’s got some power.”
Perez said he doesn’t mind the pressure of being compared with his famous father. “A lot of people say my running game (is better),” said the younger Perez, who had 30 stolen bases last season. “I really don’t try to compare myself. I just go out and try to have fun, like he did. That’s what we have in common.”
