A fire knocked out electricity and shut down train service for about 2 1/2 hours between Newark and New York City, delaying thousands of commuters Thursday.

The fire at an Amtrak power station in Kearny knocked out power on the electrified rail line around 4:45 a.m., a transit spokeswoman said. Commuters were told to transfer to PATH trains, a subway line operated between Newark and Manhattan by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
