ROUNDUP : Coffman’s 17 Kills, 4 Blocks Lift East to Volleyball Win

Neil Coffman of Chatsworth had 17 kills and four blocks for the East in a 15-10, 15-4, 8-15, 7-15, 17-16 victory over the West in an opening-round match of men’s volleyball pool play at Loyola Marymount’s Gersten Pavilion on Wednesday.
Coffman, a 1991 Volleyball Monthly first-team All-American for Cal State Northridge, helped give the East--and CSUN Coach John Price--the victory.
Ken Lynch of Northridge had 14 kills as the South defeated the North, 3-15, 15-10, 15-12, 13-15, 15-11, in another pool-play match.
Raphael Tulino, a teammate of Lynch’s at CSUN last season, had 11 kills for the North.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Debbie Penney of Burbank had 10 kills and four blocks as the West defeated the East, 13-15, 15-10, 15-9, 15-13, in a pool-play match at Gersten Pavilion.
SOFTBALL
South pitcher Tiffany Boyd threw a one-hitter, but the North scored on an error in the fifth inning to emerge with a 1-0 victory in the bronze-medal game at Hjelte Park in Encino.
North pitcher Michelle Smith allowed four hits and struck out six to atone for a 3-1 loss to the Valley-based South team on Tuesday. Lisa Erickson of La Crescenta had one of the four hits against Smith for the South.
TEAM HANDBALL
Jeff Fruin of Reseda scored a team-high five goals to lead the West team to a 17-16 victory in the second round of team handball competition at UCLA’s John Wooden Center.
Fruin, 30, playing in his fifth Festival, has won three gold medals. The West (2-0) plays the North tonight at 7 in a third-round game.
James Hop and Denny Fercho, both of Camarillo, scored three and two goals each for the West.
In results from Tuesday night, Hop scored four goals to help the West defeat the South, 18-15.
