NATION IN BRIEF : NATIONWIDE : Teachers’ Group Opposes Thomas

The American Federation of Teachers, the nation’s second-largest teachers’ union, said its governing board voted to oppose the Supreme Court nomination of conservative black jurist Clarence Thomas. Albert Shanker, president of the 780,000-member union, said in a statement that Thomas’ record “shows he would not support the aspirations of working people, minorities and trade unionists.” The National Education Assn., the largest U.S. teachers’ union, has so far taken no public position on the nomination.
