A Helping Hand for Lockheed: The Pentagon will reportedly chip in a portion of the $60 million to $80 million that Lockheed has agreed to pay to clean up San Fernando Valley drinking water. Lockheed, which last month agreed to a settlement with the Environmental Protection Agency, apparently helped cause the pollution by storing solvents in underground tanks during the 1940s, when it was producing fighter planes. The Department of Defense commonly allows contractors to pass along “overhead” costs, and Lockheed revealed in its 1990 annual report that it expected to be reimbursed for a substantial portion of the clean-up expenses.
