Re: Savvy Traveler, Aug. 18. Want an educational tour without paying the usual museum and organization prices for such adventures? We recently went to Turkey for three weeks with Dick Caldwell of USC (Sporades tours, 13101 Laurinda Way, Santa Ana 92705). Not only is Caldwell a gracious, efficient and courteous guide, but he is also a classical scholar and author.
Turkey is the Asia Minor in your history books and Caldwell, who speaks ancient Greek, modern Greek and Latin, ties the Greek myths into the Turkish sites.
Our trip covered Greek, Roman and Hittite archeological sites, the geological formations of Cappadocia and the sights of Istanbul. The price is substantially less than similar museum or college tours with meals at local restaurants and with business class accomodations.
