PREVIEW ’91 : Less Games, More Talk Fill the Day Hours

Don’t expect the plethora of game shows that dominated last fall’s daytime lineup. In fact, this season brings the end of some old favorites as “Wheel of Fortune” and “Classic Concentration” leave NBC’s daytime lineup.

Daytime this season is concentrating on talk, self-help, parenting and reality-based series. Here’s a rundown of the highlights, with the premiere dates:

“One on One with John Tesh”--The “Entertainment Tonight” co-anchor hosts a new daily celebrity interview series. Weekdays at 10 a.m. Monday.

“The Low Cholesterol Gourmet”--Lynn Fischer offers quick, easy and inexpensive ways to prepare meals that are low in cholesterol, fat and sodium. Weekdays at 8 and 11 a.m. Sept. 30.

“Homeworks”--Lynnette Jennings hosts this series focusing on the world of home decorating and design. Weekdays at 9 a.m. and noon. Sept. 30.

“Easy Does It”--Beverly de Julio and Lisa Nalen offer home-repair tips for Ms. Fix-Its. Weekdays at 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Sept. 30.

LIFETIME

“Your Baby and Child With Penelope Leach”--British psychologist and mother of two Dr. Penelope Leach will explore what happens between parents and children from birth until preschool. Weekdays at 9 a.m. Dec. 2.

KCBS

“The Maury Povich Show”--The former host of “A Current Affair” (and Mr. Connie Chung) hosts this new daytime talk show. Weekdays at 3 p.m. Monday. (Also on San Diego’s KGTV)

KNBC

“Jenny Jones”--The comedian, best known for her women-only comedy show “Girl’s Night Out,” hosts this new lighthearted weekday talk show. Weekdays at 2 p.m. Sept. 16. (Also weekdays at 10 a.m. on San Diego’s KNSD).

“Love Stories”--Kristian Alfonso hosts this series, which uses state-of-the-art technology to tell love stories. Weekdays at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 16. (Also on San Diego’s XETV)

“In America”--John Gibson, Joe Oliver and Vicki Liviakis host this news magazine covering issues, events and personalities that affect the daily lives of Americans. Saturdays at 3:30 p.m., but time will vary weekly because of sports events. Already premiered.

“First Look”--Chuck Henry (late of “Eye on L.A.”) and Paula McClure host this “futurecast,” which takes a “first look” at new innovations, technologies and products and systems that will affect and change lives into the 21st Century. Saturdays at 4 p.m., but time will vary weekly because of sports events. Sept. 14. (Also Saturdays at 1 a.m. and Sundays at 9:30 a.m. on KGTV).

“Emergency Call”--This weekly series profiles the daily lives of men and women who work in rescue units, fire departments and police forces in large and small cities throughout the United States. Saturdays at 4:30 p.m., but time will vary weekly because of sports events. Already premiered. (Also Sundays at 6:30 p.m. on KNSD).

“Second Generation”--Hispanic music video series. Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. Already premiered.

“Soul Train”--Don Cornelius and company move from KTTV to KTLA. Saturdays at 11 a.m. Sept. 21.

KABC

“Live With Regis & Kathie Lee”--The syndicated daytime talk show moves from KCAL to KABC, replacing the long-running “A.M. Los Angeles.” Weekdays at 9 a.m. Oct. 7.

KCAL

“The Chuck Woolery Show”--Mr. “Love Connection” hosts a new entertainment-oriented talk show. Weekdays at 1 p.m. Sept. 16. (Also weekdays at 3 p.m. on San Diego’s KFMB).

“Tarzan”--The greatest swinger of them all returns in this new syndicated action-adventure series in which Tarzan is an environmentalist. Wolf Larson plays Tarzan. Saturdays at 3:30 p.m. Sept. 28. (Also Sundays at 7 p.m. on San Diego’s KTTY.)

“Superboy”--The syndicated series about the early adventures of “Superman” moves from KTLA to KCAL. Saturdays at 3 p.m. Oct. 5.

“Beauty and the Beast”--Weekly repeats of the cult CBS series, starring Ron Perlman and Linda Hamilton. Saturdays at 4 p.m. Sept. 28. (Also Sundays at 7 p.m. on San Diego’s KUSI).
