CHARGER UPDATE : NOTEBOOK / T.J. SIMERS : Miller’s Playing Status a Source of Some Confusion for Henning
SAN DIEGO — The Chargers upgraded the status of wide receiver Anthony Miller (hamstring) from questionable to probable Thursday, but Coach Dan Henning said it was a mistake.
“He’s upgraded to probable?” Henning said with surprise. “I told them not to upgrade him to probable until (Friday).
“He’s got to tell me he’s going to practice first; he says he thinks he might be able to practice (today). He didn’t practice (Thursday), but he worked hard.”
Miller ran on a treadmill in San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium and then ran on the side while the Chargers practiced for the Broncos. He missed the fourth quarter of last week’s game.
The Chargers have been working with rookie wide receiver Yancey Thigpen in practice in the event Miller can’t play, but Thigpen has one little problem: He keeps dropping the ball.
Also in Thursday’s practice, the Chargers worked on trying not to jump offsides against the Broncos. Quarterback John Elway likes to bob his head when he calls signals. In the past he’s had great success pulling the Charger defense offside.
Jeff Graham, who is imitating Elway in practice, drew the defense offside twice Thursday.
“You tell them to look at the ball,” Henning said. “The same thing they’re supposed to do against everybody . . . You have to have some kinesthetic sense.”
Some what? One reporter suggested that might be why the Chargers have jumped offside so much; they didn’t know what Henning was talking about.
Henning was not amused. “What a marvelous observation that was,” he said.
