Mixed Media : In Brief : Ivo Perelman, “Live in New York,” Video Artists International ($29.95).

This concert video shot at New York’s Knitting Factory features the young Brazilian tenor saxophonist applying his searing-toned, Albert Ayler-meshed-with-early-Gato-Barbieri style to three pieces based on Brazilian children’s songs from his debut K2B2 album. The club’s narrow stage limits camera angles, throwing undue focus on soloists, rather than the collaborative improvising by an all-star supporting cast including vocalist Flora Purim and pianist Geri Allen. Still, Perelman successfully brings home the kind of searching, intense jazz that rarely finds its way to home video.
