Dismissal of North Charges
It seems so sad that the lessons of the Ollie North case, and of the Iran-Contra cover-up in general, are lost on many Americans. Certainly, most of us were bamboozled with the posturings and sound-bites of the 1980s, and some may never understand what really happened.
Robert McFarlane lays it out very clearly in his commentary (“The American Way of Scandal Fixes Nothing,” Sept. 18), and he was in a position to see events as they were. McFarlane was one of our more insightful public officials. What a waste that such a man should have devoted his service to the shallow, vigilante White House of the 1980s!
