Van Nuys (1-2, 0-1) opened the scoring with an 18-yard pass from Bill Calhoun to receiver Patric Alvarado, capping a 10-play drive that included a 47-yard run for an apparent score by Harold Boudreaux. The run was nullified by penalty. Boudreaux lead all runners with 155 yards in 26 carries.

But Van Nuys struck for two touchdowns just eight seconds apart to take a 21-7 lead after three quarters. Calhoun, who was eight of 17 for 140 and two touchdowns, threw a 39-yard scoring pass to Garreth Lesley. On the first play after the ensuing kickoff, Lampkin fumbled at the Braves’ 30-yard line, and Gary Guemiksizian returned the ball for a touchdown.
Birmingham cut the lead to 21-14 four seconds into the fourth quarter when Lampkin connected with Mike Moguel on a 20-yard scoring pass.
