LISBON — Portuguese Prime Minister Anibal Cavaco Silva declared victory for his Social Democratic Party in Sunday’s general elections.
“We return to power with a majority,” he said as official results confirmed computer predictions of a landslide triumph for the center-right party.
Official results showed that with more than half the votes counted, the Social Democrats had 50.6% of the vote, far ahead of the center-left Socialist Party with 29.2%.
Computer projections gave the Social Democrats 133 deputies, a clear majority in the new 230-seat Parliament.
Portugal’s hard-line Communist Party, which expressed initial support for the attempted coup against Soviet President Mikhail S. Gorbachev in August, came in third with 8.9%.
