Mandatory AIDS testing of health professionals is unnecessary, Health and Human Services Secretary Louis W. Sullivan told dentists at a national convention in Seattle. Sullivan said new federal guidelines were sufficient. Those urge, but do not require, health workers to test themselves for the AIDS virus if they do work in which there is a high risk of infection spreading. Sullivan said standard infection control practices would prove more effective than mandatory testing.
