Southwest Turns Up the Heat on Midway: Southwest Airlines Co., the only major U.S. airline expected to turn a profit this year, raised its bid for Chicago assets of struggling Midway Airlines Inc., raising the stakes in a bidding war. Dallas-based Southwest offered Midway $28 million for its gates and related assets at Chicago’s Midway Airport and said Midway would have the option to buy back or sublease most of those gates if it survives as an independent carrier. Southwest also said it will consider a joint-marketing agreement with Midway and negotiate to buy the carrier or help sell assets if Midway stops flying.
