A 43-year-old man who tried to dash across a darkened Ventura Freeway on foot late Sunday in Ventura was struck by a car and killed, authorities said Monday.
The Ventura man apparently died of a head injury, but an autopsy will be conducted today to confirm the cause, Deputy Coroner Mitch Breese said.
His identity was withheld pending notification of his family.
A test showed that the deceased man had a blood alcohol level of 0.24%, three times the legal limit, Breese said.
The man was also missing his shoes, he said.
The accident occurred at 11:36 p.m. on the McBride Bridge, which supports the Ventura Freeway as it crosses the Ventura River.
The motorist whose car struck the man, 23-year-old Daniel Maxwell of Camarillo, said he did not see the pedestrian until it was too late to brake, Jim Utter of the California Highway Patrol said.
Maxwell, who was driving south in the freeway’s fast lane, was not cited.
