MISSION VIEJO : Hearing Slated on Civic Center Plan

The City Council is scheduled to hold a hearing Thursday to take public comments on plans to build a multimillion-dollar civic center.
Although the issue has been before the council several times, the current hearing will be the first time that the city has taken citizen comments and let the public know about the project in detail.
“This will basically be an informational meeting for city residents,” Assistant City Manager Dan Joseph said.
Last week, the council agreed on a $17.2-million budget to build the civic center, which will include an 80,000-square-foot building on about 8 acres off Crown Valley Parkway.
The proposal is being challenged by the Citizens Action Committee, a local political group that is organizing a petition drive to put the center on the ballot to let voters decide.
The group’s campaign against the center will start next week with a citywide mailer that should reach the public by Wednesday. The committee will also be mailing petitions and informational flyers.
